The current study explores the rhetorical device of contrast (Muqabalah) in Surah An-Nahl, a chapter distinguished by its abundant use of this technique. The surah contains 25 instances of contrast, accounting for 20% of its verses. It also emphasizes the three main principles of belief: monotheism, prophethood, and resurrection, consistent with the themes of Makkan surahs. Additionally, it enumerates divine blessings, unmatched in other chapters, earning it the title Surah of Blessings. The surah also addresses fundamental rulings, legislative principles, and highlights virtues while rebuking vices. The study focuses on analyzing the occurrences of contrast in Surah An-Nahl. The study avoids reiterating foundational discussions on the linguistic and terminological meanings, types, and benefits of contrast, previously detailed in the author’s earlier study on Surat Al-Ra’d. Instead, the present study concentrates on categorizing and analyzing the verses featuring contrast based on the three primary themes—monotheism, prophethood, resurrection—along with virtues, vices, and the denunciation of pre-Islamic customs. The study has three main objectives. It highlights the significance of the rhetorical device of contrast and its role in achieving the objectives of Surah An-Nahl. It analyzes the instances of contrast and their relation to the main themes of the surah. examine the rhetorical subtleties and intricacies within the contrast structures and their impact on meaning and conciseness. The study employs an inductive-analytical approach by identifying instances of contrast in Surah An-Nahl, classifying them according to the main themes, and analyzing their rhetorical and semantic implications. Key Findings and recommendations include: The contrast in Surah An-Nahl is characterized by its richness of meaning, precision, and conciseness, while maintaining the contrast appeal. The diversity in contrast styles enhances the harmony between the meanings and the overarching themes of the surah. Most instances of antithesis deviate from the apparent meaning, enriching the text with rhetorical subtleties and nuances. Researchers are encouraged to continue studying rhetorical devices in the Quran, especially those that contribute to elucidating the principles of belief, ethics, and divine blessings.
