Abstract
I am pleased to present to the readers of Tadabbur Magazine a report on my doctoral dissertation titled: “Aspects of Interpretation and Explanation in the Hadiths in Which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) Cited Quranic Verses: Collection and Study.”
The significance of the Prophetic interpretation and its esteemed status is hardly overlooked by anyone engaged in the study of Tafsir (Quranic exegesis) or the broader Islamic sciences. It is the second type of authoritative Tafsir (Al-Tafsir Al-Ma’thur), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was the first interpreter of the Noble Quran. From his Hadiths, the principles of Quranic interpretation and methods of its elucidation are derived. His interpretation (peace and blessings be upon him) is a fundamental source that every exegete must rely upon when interpreting the words of Allah Almighty. How could it be otherwise, when Allah, the Exalted, promised His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to clarify His Book, as He said: “Indeed, upon Us is its collection and its recitation. So when We have recited it, then follow its recitation. Then upon Us is its clarification” [Quran 75:17-19]. Furthermore, Allah commanded him to convey that clarification to the Ummah, saying: “And We have sent down to you the Reminder that you may clarify to the people what was sent down to them and that they might reflect” [Quran 16:44].
